Over here in Lahore when I bought my car I took it the Toyota mechanics right away because I didn't know any good JDM mechanic initially and as my family has always maintained their cars from authorised Toyota /Honda dealerships. Plus I didn't trust these 'private' mechanics.
I get my 2007 move serviced from both Toyota and a private mechanic.
The Toyota people - clean the throttle body, service brake pads, do alignment and balancing, check OBD diagnostics
My mechanic (associated with filter house) - changes oil, oil filter, air filter, changed brake pads (6 months ago), change compressor, and serviced A/C (4 months ago)
I take mine to Toyota because the mechanic doesn't have wheel alignment, balancing or OBD diagnostics.
Plus being a little paranoid, I feel that my car has been checked by professional mechanics after every few months. It doesn't cost much. Maximum 3-4 k every 6 months and 5-10k to the private mechanic (including spares) twice a year is the expenditure of maintaining it.
So it all depends on how much equipment your mechanic has. And how good your local Toyota dealership is. This car is not very expensive to maintain but do replace whatever wears out.
I've had mine for 14 months now and haven't faced any issue (except air conditioning in june-resolved in a week) because I don't spare any expense on its maintenance.
