Hi All,
In connection with Pajero Exceed 2.8TD (Second Generation-
1996 – Automatic Transmission) I need help from Pajero Owners/experts on the
question whether it is possible to engage “Reverse Gear” accidentally from
Drive (D or 2) while vehicle is in forward motion (approx. speed 50-90km/h)? I
know modern cars have “Reverse Inhibit” which prevent this unwanted situation
but I think older models (like Pajero Second Gen.) might not have “Reverse
Inhibit”
I was driving on a highway at the speed of 60km/h (… and
reducing – slight brakes applied) when passenger who was telling me something about
automatic transmission suddenly shifted the gear. I think he was trying to
demonstrate that shifting b/w D & 2 is possible while in motion but he
pushed the stick so hard that probably it went to R changing through D and N.
The rear wheels screamed for 1-2 second and engine stalled (watching him
shifting I unintentionally pressed brake paddle - not too hard obviously). I initially thought something bad had happened
to the transmission but I started the engine, put the vehicle in D and it
worked as usual. I checked that all gears including reverse was working but I am
concerned that it might had something bad mainly with the transmission box or with
differential, half axel , torque converter or even to the engine.
My questions are: firstly, I am not sure that R was actually
engaged; I am assuming this due to engine stall and rear wheels screaming (I was
in 2H)… while restarting the engine, I unintentionally shifted the lever to P
or N so can’t remember whether it was at R or some other position before I restarted
the engine. Will Exceed (2nd Gen.) will go to R from D at the speed
of 60km/h (or a bit lower) when brake paddle is slightly pressed and
transmission lever lock-switch is pressed while shifting? Was engine stall was
a result of shifting accidentally to Reverse? Is that accidental shifting to R
is possible? If yes, how harmful is the shifting at the speed/scenario
discussed above? How could I check that whether it caused any harm or not?
