first you wrote - engine wont shut off, now mention that button goes to ACC mode rather than ON mode if you shut it off in N - the engine will positively shut off but the ignition will be in ACC mode.
Every car in the world after the mid 90s does that, even if it has a shift lever, the key wont be able to be pulled out unless you put the lever in Park. The supercheap push button makes it easy for manufacturers, in older days it was either cable controlled or solenoid lockout controlled.
