Move lever to N and try to start, if it still fails, get a 12v test lamp and probe the starter trigger to see if you are getting power to it when the key spins.
If you get power but no activity, smack the starter once to see it spins.
If nothing then do voltage drop tests on both negative and positive sides to test the integrity of the wires and terminals.
Also.. make sure battery has 12.6v when resting. If its below or at 11.8v at rest. Its a piece of trash and needs to be replaced.
